About Me

Hello! My name is Alaina Holcombe, and I am originally from Fort Collins, Colorado. After graduating high school in 2023, I moved to Gunnison, Colorado. I began going to school at Western Colorado University that fall, majoring in art. I will graduate from Western in May 2027 with my Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, with an emphasis in ceramics.

Back in Fort Collins, I began taking clay classes at a local pottery studio when I was about 12 years old. I have always felt a calling to art, but quickly became obsessed with ceramics during these classes. In high school, I was heavily involved in the art department at my school and was encouraged to further my education in art at a college level.

After I graduate from Western, I hope to go to grad school and continue learning, experimenting, and having fun with clay!

Artist Statement

In my work, I explore color and its relationship with form. I play with color combinations to create depth, both visually and conceptually. I strive to create emotional art that borders on surrealism and contemporary pop art by combining bold colors with abstract and stylized faces, figures, and characters.

I like to tell a story with each piece. A lot of my work is rooted in my childhood, when I would dream up storylines and build imaginative worlds for my toys.

My primary medium is ceramics, and all other work is made to support my ceramics. I draw to visualize concepts I’m exploring, understand proportions, and discover compositions. I play with color combinations through painting, and I work with other materials to explore new ideas.

With my ceramics, I love to create large-scale sculptural work and dabble in functional pottery when I can.

The vibrant color and playfulness in my work bring me joy, and I hope to convey that same joy to my viewers. Enjoy!
